In March 2003 the hub was commissioned to research and write a report identifying how the creative industries could be developed in the City of Canterbury and its nearest coastal towns, Whitstable and Herne Bay.
We researched using a variety of methods including one-to-one discussions, telephone interviews, desk research and online questionnaires. We sought insight from key cultural entrepreneurs, artists, creative businesses, administrators and educators in the local Higher Education Institutions. We gathered statistical data and real-life primary source evidence (often dismissed as ‘anecdotal evidence’ – here at the hub we value first-hand expertise very highly).
Our report drew a vivid picture of the complex creative ‘ecosystem’ of the district. From this data we created a report of case studies, statistical evidence, sectoral analysis and innovative recommendations for future development for the creative industries in the Canterbury district. As well as outlining where our client was already working effectively, the report cited best practice, lack of provision, potential new partnerships and ways of working. Canterbury City Council has already acted upon the conclusions that we offered to them.
‘A key factor in selecting the hub over their rivals was their holistic approach, dynamism and a genuine grasp of what we wanted to achieve with this work. Our main aim was to create a living, breathing document with achievable goals and long term ambitions and this is exactly what we now have. the hub have a great way of working and excellent feedback processes which allow you collaborate and monitor the work effectively. Their genuine interest and enthusiasm is infectious with all they come into contact with and this has resulted in creating a real buzz about the support we are hoping to offer our Creative and Cultural Industries. Importantly the hub has shown us that it is not always necessary to have huge amounts of funding to implement new ways of working but simple shifts in attitude can achieve a great deal. We have greatly enjoyed our experience of working with the hub and look forward to a continuing relationship and recommend them to anybody looking for visionary yet achievable results.’
