the hub’s Internship Programme

hub interns past and present
the hub offers interns a chance to join our busy team on a full or part time basis. We provide successful candidates with invaluable experience of working in an exciting and challenging think-tank environment. Successful candidates have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of the hub’s activities during their internship, which will usually last for three months. Although we encourage creative approaches to contribute to any aspect of our work, our interns most often work on:
- Research – Working with an individual hub researcher or project team, being involved in desk, literary and web research.
- Office admin – Interns will be an essential part of a busy office helping run the day – to – day working of the office, assisting with such tasks as mailouts, photocopying and first contact to the office.
We look for people showing a strong commitment to the arts, particularly music. Applicants should either be recent graduates in arts management or related field or, if self-educated, have an equivalent level of experience. Prospective interns should be able to commit to the full agreed period and show reliability and punctuality, be a good team worker, pro-active and independent with a friendly manner, and possess good verbal and written communication skills, as well as computer skills.
“Finding direction in an arts based career can be difficult in many ways. The hub’s Internship has gifted me with the experience of working closely as part of a team with devoted and respected professionals, and has inspired me to pursue a career in arts development and education. I worked on a range of varied and exciting projects and this helped me understand the many ways in which different people contribute to the arts industry through their various job roles to achieve some spectacular results. The guys at the hub are friendly and supportive and will readily adapt the experience towards individual interests and requirements. I would highly recommend this Internship to anyone wanting to progress with a career in the arts.”
Gemma Scott, hub intern May 08 – Aug 08
“As the hub’s intern I was supported through an exciting and challenging three months, working within a very friendly and knowledgeable team. This internship is an fantastic opportunity to be fully involved in a specific project, as well as gaining experience in the office of a busy arts organisation. The internship helped me to develop a range of skills and it was a pleasure to gain an insight into many of the hub’s projects.”
Jennifer Coe, hub intern Nov 07 – Jan 08
“I can’t believe 3 months have gone by so quickly! I have loved every moment of my time at the hub. A jam packed and intensive internship that far exceeded my already high expectations. The inspirational and experienced hub team are always on hand to offer advice and support. I applied to the hub because their work across a broad spectrum of areas in the arts throughout the UK appealed to my desire to broaden my horizons. I was truly impressed by how well established their internship programme is and I can honestly say I felt like a valued member of the team. I can’t think of any stage that I ever felt like I was the person ‘on work experience’. I gained a fantastic insight into the UK Arts scene and I now feel confident, having previously had a background in classical music in Ireland, that I can progress in this very competitive sector, here in the UK. I am moving on, with the hubs help and support, to Westminster Cathedral as their music administrator. I wholeheartedly recommend the hub internship programme to anyone with a strong passion for the arts.”
Aiofe Daly, hub intern June – Aug 07
‘’The hub intern programme, a great place if you want to understand what makes a growing arts development practice work. A chance to get a breath of experience across a range of projects with inspiring and creative individuals. The placement expanded my understandings of international and UK funding systems and initiatives, and increased my budgeting, researching, production and marketing skills. A very loaded three months interning, where you make the most out of the people there.’
Denice Dever, hub intern Dec 06 – Feb 07
‘’I’ve found my time here very inspiring and have learned a lot about my capabilities and the opportunities available to me in the arts. the hub has a great philosophy to their work practice and each member of the team has a wealth of knowledge and expertise which they are more than willing to share with you. Through the hub I have gained greater confidence working within the arts/music sector and will be moving on to do the job of Productions Co-ordinator for Serious, a prolific music events company (something which I would not have thought possible only three months ago).’
Rob Timmer, hub intern April – July 06
‘’I have loved my time at the hub. Being part of such a dynamic, passionate and knowlegeable team has offered an engaging and challenging insight into how creative ideas are turned into viable business. This has enabled me to re-focus my career trajectory in a highly suppportive environment, and I leave with greater confidence to apply for those jobs I previously felt were out of my reach.’
Sorcha Hunter, hub intern Jan – April 06
‘’the hub appealed to me because of the level of expertise and experience within its team, the broad spectrum of clients and wide range of work that it undertakes. I knew that the first step for me to get to where I wanted to be would be to undertake an internship with them. I felt that as their intern I would be provided with an introduction to the arts management world from the inside.
As a result of my internship I have established a much clearer vision of where my career can go. This has culminated in me finding full time employment with a prolific music organisation (Tomorrow’s Warriors), something I would not have felt confident or equipped to take up prior to my time as intern at the hub.’’
Sean Corby, hub intern January – April 04
