Exhibition Road Music Day

Back to Live events »

Exhibition Road is one of Central London’s most vibrant artistic neighbourhoods, home to a number of important cultural institutions such as The Natural History Museum, Imperial College, Goethe-Institut London and The Serpentine Gallery. Recently, these and other like-minded institutions have formed the the Exhibition Road Cultural Group, in order to develop joint projects and enhance the Road’s cultural offering for local residents and visitors.

the hub worked with the Group in 2005 to produce the first ever Exhibition Road Music Day, a day-long celebration of amateur and professional music-making, which happened as part of the international Fête de la Musique festival and involved many of the Road’s cultural organisations.

The first Exhibition Road Music Day was a huge success, drawing crowds of more than 10,000 to over seventy free musical events – from jazz and samba in Hyde Park and electronic installations at the Science Museum to Central Asian music and storytelling at the Ismaili Centre.

the hub’s role in coordinating the work of the eleven participating organisations was crucial; we advised on and coordinated programme content and format, gave marketing and fundraising support and were a key part of the event team on the day. Our aim was to work with the Group to develop the skills that they would need to produce the event on their own in the future. Since 2006, they have done this, and Exhibition Road Music Day has firmly established itself as a key date in the capital’s cultural calendar.

We think you’d love the festival. Please find out more about it by visiting the festival website www.exhibitionroadmusicday.org

‘2005 saw the emergence of Exhibition Road’s first collaborative project Exhibition Road Music Day – a project involving all organisations in an around Exhibition Road in London’s SW7, and including the V&A, Natural History Museum, Ismaili Centre, Goethe-Institut London and many more. the hub not only produced ERMD in 2005, but were instrumental in enabling the group of representatives from each participating organisation to learn what producing a festival is all about. From their lead we have created a sustainable and well functioning working group for ERMD 2006′
