Big About Music (BAM) is an innovative music project designed for young people in the Northamptonshire towns of Corby and Kettering. The project aimed to provide high quality music-making opportunities for over 1,700 young people in the area until March 2005.
the hub’s role was central to ensuring the success of the project. We worked with our client to raise sponsorship and develop and implement their marketing strategy, including branding, media coverage and the production of the quarterly BAM newsletter. Our innovative approach put the young people who are involved in this project at the centre of the activities. We set up a small team of Young Marketers based in the two towns who write web copy, conduct interviews, approve design and maintain a peer-to-peer network that keeps BAM in touch with the communities it serves.
BAM covers many musical genres in its project work, including African drumming, turntablism, big band, Chinese, rock and pop. Many of the projects run by BAM are aimed at young people with little or no musical experience and focused on engaging those who wouldn’t ordinarily have the opportunity to learn an instrument. Workshops are available in a variety of settings, including playgroups, schools, youth clubs and local venues.
BAM is the 20th Youth Music Action Zone, funded by Youth Music, the national leading charity that provides high quality and diverse musical experiences for all young people. BAM is led by a consortium of experienced local partners who deliver strands of musical activity throughout the project. In addition to Youth Music, BAM is funded by Northamptonshire County Council, the Eastern Orchestral Board, and Corby and Kettering Borough Councils.
‘Marketing is as much about developing product and identity as it is about promotion and publicity so it was crucial for Big About Music to choose marketing specialists that understand what we’re trying to achieve. In the hub we feel we’ve found a partner that has quickly tuned in, not only to our own aspirations, but also to our capacity and our ways of working.’
Dave Howard, Director of Big About Music
